The purpose of the belt system is to indicate seniority and experience, while giving easily-identified goals and rewards - the goal is to reach the higher standard, the belt is the reward. All applicants require an acceptable level of attendance building up to their test, and the approval of their instructor, signifying respect and effort in the Dojo. Students progress through White, Blue, Yellow, Green and Brown belt before being eligible to test for Black belt. Tests up to Brown belt are held locally in April, August and December. Tests to Black belt are held on courses with Kancho Ninomiya. Grades are divided into Junior (under 14) and Senior (14 +) categories, with different emphasis at each level. Juniors normally progress to Senior status on reaching 14, although often a little longer may be required before attempting their next test - as a Senior. The tests are short and sharp. We test the results of training, not just the process. Students are expected to perform their Kihon, Kata and Kumite with skill, power and exemplary fighting spirit. Careless mistakes and/or a lack of effort are not acceptable. Tests are challenging, but within reach for students that train regularly, concentrate and make an effort. It is in everyone's interest that we only promote those who strive to reach high standards. Occasionally candidates will be disappointed but the opportunity should be taken to learn what was lacking, and then press on to greater efforts. |
