TRAINING

"Don't just train hard - everyone does that. Train smart!"

(Kancho Ninomiya)

Enshin is intense functional training .

Every combat instructor has to balance safety and realism. Our way is to start by learning skills and making them powerful on pads. We then make sure our positioning and strategy is correct by working with compliant partners. The next stage is to test them against non-compliant partners - within the rules - until we find our own unique and most effective way of fighting. Finding what works for you is the key to success.

It is important that this process is not rushed, as only reliable skills are any use in the real world outside the dojo. This takes time and effort, whilst simultaneously building fitness, confidence and mental toughness.

Enshin karate is a vigorous activity involving dynamic movements. A properly structured warm-up is therefore essential. This includes a pulse raiser, static and/or dynamic stretches of increasing range and intensity, and specific movements to prepare the body and mind for karate training.

Please remember to arrive for class in plenty of time to get changed and start jogging loose.  Once the formal warm-up has commenced, late arrivals are not permitted.

CLOTHING

We train in Gi, but feel free to wear any loose fitting clothes until you buy one.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

I am proud of our safety record and the welfare of our members is always my first priority.

For general training you will need a pair of shin and instep pads.

Once you start sparring you will also need:

Fist mitts
Groin (male) or Chest (female) guards
Mouthguards

No sparring will be allowed for members who do not have the correct safety equipment.

Intensity
The very nature of combat training inspires people to challenge themselves, but it is never a good idea to push yourself to the point of vomiting or passing out. If you feel unwell during training, sit down until you recover then join back in when you feel able to; at a lower intensity.
Regular training makes for safe training. It helps us to get a ‘feel’ for how the body is coping and we can then moderate our level of effort accordingly. It can be dangerous to train just a couple of times a month and push yourself extremely hard. The risk of injury increases dramatically and no fitness benefits will be gained.
