TRAINING

"Don't just train hard - everyone does that. Train smart!"

(Kancho Ninomiya)

Enshin is intense functional training .

Technical skills and strategy are practised with focussed repetition, becoming faster, smoother, more powerful and finally instinctive. This takes time and effort, but rising to the challenge is one of the main benefits of training, as it simultaneously improves fitness, focus and mental toughness.

The final goals of training are:

Powerful and effective skills for combat or self-protection.

Physical fitness and resilience.

A strong fighting spirit.

How to get the most from training: -

==========================
Training in the Dojo is reinforced by time a student spends studying outside. This can be practising the techniques learned in the dojo or working on your general fitness. Advice on supplementary training is always available, for instance using kettlebells:

Background reading on Karate and martial arts is also motivating and beneficial.

I am often asked which books students should buy for self study and general training advice. I heartily recommend you start with these:

Essential reading for Enshin karate students:

Sabaki Method – Kancho Ninomiya
Kancho’s definitive book about Enshin karate and Sabaki strategy. Absolutely everything you need to further understand and improve your karate training.

My Journey in Karate – Kancho Ninomiya
Kancho’s training history and the development of Enshin karate. You will be inspired reading about Kancho’s life and training.
Both titles are available from the store on www.enshin.com or from www.amazon.co.uk
In addition to the above a full range of Instructional and Tournament DVD’s are available from www.enshin.com

For Stretching:

Stretching Scientifically – Tom Kurz
Logical plans to help you get loose, plus scientific and proven advice on training theory and practise.
Available from www.stadion.com

For Tournament preparation / advanced conditioning:

Infinite Intensity – Ross Enamait
Written for fighters. Various routines from tough to unbelievably tough. If you lose to a more skilful opponent, the credit belongs to them - you can learn from the experience and correct your mistakes in the dojo. If you lose to a fitter opponent, that’s your responsibility. Never let poor conditioning be your excuse.
Available from www.rosstraining.com

For background and insight:

Angry White Pyjamas: An Oxford Poet Trains with the Tokyo Riot Police - Robert Twigger
A fascinating and at times highly amusing read. A man's year-long journey to challenge and develop himself in the toughest Aikido dojo in Japan; how spirit and determination changed him and his life.
Available from www.amazon.co.uk

(Please note: I’m recommending these books because I’ve practised what they contain and feel stronger, looser and more knowledgeable as a result. GC)
